Does ProtonVPN Work With Disney Plus? (USA/UK/Canada/Australia Covered)

ProtonVPN are one of the most reputable and trusted VPN’s on the market, but accessing streaming services like Disney Plus is always a tricky business, since the streaming platforms are aggressively trying to block VPN usage.

Does ProtonVPN work specifically for accessing the Disney Plus service? Also, that’s a broad question, since there’s different English speaking countries users could be searching from. Therefore, for clarity, we’re answering this question specifically for Disney Plus users in the major English speaking countries – USA, UK, Canada and Australia.

ProtonVPN’s most expensive servers on their Plus Plan do work in accessing Disney Plus in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia. Their free servers or those on the Basic plan however, do not work; only the Plus servers allow access to Disney+

Therefore, you need to get their most expensive plan to get access to Disney Plus, but that generally is the case with streaming VPNs – you need to pay top buck to get the thing that’s hardest to reliably provide users – access to streaming platforms determined to block VPN users.

But the general news is good – ProtonVPN are a viable option, along with one of their main rivals, ExpressVPN, in accessing Disney streaming services.

Let’s look at the issue in more detail.

ProtonVPN Plus Plan Servers Work With Disney Plus

The bottom line on this is very simple:

ProtonVPN’s Plus Plan premium servers do work in allowing access to Disney Plus in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia. As long as the user is using a ProtonVPN Plus Plan server in the correct country, and their Disney+ account is also located in that country, then the service should work.

Here’s a snapshot taken from ProtonVPN’s own support page, clarifying that their service works fine with Disney Plus in all major US/Commonwealth English speaking countries:

So there it is, “straight from the horse’s mouth”, so to speak! Their service does work in allowing users to access Disney Plus.

However, you do need their Plus Plan to make this work. Their free servers or Basic Plan won’t work – see below where we cover this.

ProtonVPN Plus Server Locations (USA/UK/Canada/Australia)

Now we know that ProtonVPN does work in accessing Disney Plus on their Plus Plan, let’s give a quick overview of the Premium server locations in each of these main countries, so users know what’s available:

  • USA – 400+ severs spread out across New York, Secaucus, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Denver, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Ashburn, San Jose, Phoenix, Washington DC, Seattle
  • UK – 60+ servers spread out across London and Manchester.
  • Canada – 60+ servers spread out across Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto.
  • Australia – servers spread out across Perth, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide.

Which ProtonVPN Plan/Servers Does I Need To Access Disney Plus?

This is an important clarification point that’s missing from a lot of content on ProtonVPN. They do have different tiers of pricing and server quality, so just saying “get ProtonVPN for streaming” isn’t really detailed enough. You need to know which ProtonVPN plan to get.

  • Free servers – Unlimited use but only servers in USA, Netherlands, Japan. Won’t work.
  • Basic Plan – $4/month – Decent VPN servers but also won’t work for streaming. Actually not visible on their site anymore when checking just now, but some current users will be presumably signed up to this plan.
  • Plus Plan – $8/month – Top notch servers; these are the ones you need to access Disney Plus

Therefore you are having to buy their most expensive plan to access streaming services, but the other major VPN that’s known to be reliable for streaming (ExpressVPN) is also similarly priced.

Do The ProtonVPN Free Servers Work With Disney Plus?

ProtonVPN’s Plus Plan is one of the more expensive on the market, so users might naturally be wondering if they can get away with using the free servers they offer in USA/Netherlands/Japan, and seeing if they’re work in accessing Disney Plus.

This would only be testable in the USA anyway, since they don’t have free servers in the UK/Canada, but the answer is pretty clear anyway:

ProtonVPN’s free servers will almost certainly not work in accessing Disney Plus in any country. You need the most expensive, but also better obfuscated and advanced servers that their Plus Plan provides in order to access streaming services like Disney+.

Whilst it’s always worth giving it a go if you have a USA Disney Plus account, you’re almost guaranteed that their free servers won’t work, as with any other VPN. Free VPN servers tend to be the easiest for websites to detect and block. And with ProtonVPN, even the entry level paid servers on the Basic Plan won’t work. You need to pay for Premium servers to access streaming services.

With ProtonVPN, that means forking out $8/month at current prices for the best servers they have, but they are a reputable and reliable brand, so you know what you’re getting.

What If ProtonVPN Doesn’t Work With Disney Plus?

Despite ProtonVPN assuring customers on their own site that their Plus servers work fine with Disney Plus in major English speaking countries, it is true that there’s an ongoing, dynamic, cat-and-mouse battle between streaming platforms and VPN providers.

The streaming sites keep trying to block VPN IP addresses, leading to the more upmarket VPN services issuing new ones and finding new ways to obfuscate their servers so they can still provide access to the streaming sites.

Therefore it is a fluid and changing situation, and it may sometimes happen that you do get a ProtonVPN plan, but find even using their servers, you can’t access Disney Plus where you are. What happens then?

Firstly, there are some troubleshooting steps to try:

  • Make sure you’re using Plus Servers (not Basic or Free servers)
  • Try disconnecting and reconnecting to a different server in the same country.
  • Log out and back into your Disney Plus account
  • Try clearing your browser/device cache

See our full guide on troubleshooting Disney+ connections issues when using a VPN, for more suggestions, plus alternative VPN’s that can work with the service.

If even after trying all the things you can to fix the problem, you still aren’t able to access Disney Plus, then if the worst comes to the worst, ProtonVPN have  a 30 day refund guarantee to get your money back.

So if after troubleshooting, plus contacting Customer support, you still can’t get it working, you can always get a refund on your plan within the first month, and try a different VPN instead (ExpressVPN is also recommended for streaming access)
